Tentative contract reached between West Coast dockworkers and employers, potentially ending a long labor dispute that disrupted international trade at major seaports handling $1 trillion worth of cargo annually.

Nine months of contentious negotiations blamed each other for import/export delays, affecting 29 ports from San Diego to Seattle, responsible for a quarter of all U.S. international trade, especially with Asia.

The proposed five-year deal requires approval from the 13,000-member International Longshore and Warehouse Union's rank-and-file, representing dockworkers.

Negotiations between the union and Pacific Maritime Association, representing shipping lines and cargo handling companies, started formally in May after the previous six-year contract expired on July 1.

U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez announced agreement, with work resuming Saturday evening after recent cutbacks in weekend shifts by employers.

The agreement is seen as beneficial for workers and the industry, allowing ports to resume full operations, said maritime association President James McKenna and union President Bob McEllrath.

Employers accused dockworkers of deliberately causing congestion for bargaining leverage, while the union attributed the jam to pre-existing dysfunction at West Coast ports, including a lack of truck beds for container transportation.

Employers stopped night work crews in January, focusing on clearing existing containers; the move was criticized by the union as an attempt to harm workers financially, leading to the involvement of a federal mediator.
